History of the Mercedes-Benz Logo

The vision of this automaker was set in motion all the way back in 1890, when Gottlieb Daimler founded the company that would later mature into Mercedes-Benz. Although the company was known as Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, or DMG, when Wilhelm Maybach and Emil Jellinek took over the company in 1890, Daimler’s sons Paul and Adolf would be integral to the company for years to come.

As the two brothers Paul and Adolf reflected back on their heritage, they fondly remembered a postcard sent by their father in 1872. On this postcard, the location of their home was marked with a 3-pointed star. From that sentimental origin, the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star was born. In that same year, 1909, DMG acquired the logo and began marking all of their vehicles with the symbolic emblem.

Initially, the color of the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star was blue. In 1926, a laurel border was also added to the design. By 1934, the star was changed to the prolific silver Avon drivers know and love.

The Mercedes-Benz Logo Meaning

As described above, the Mercedes-Benz logo meaning is tied to the indelible dream of one man, which grew into a legacy of superior automotive design. Along with the charming tale of admiration the Daimler sons had for their father, Mercedes-Benz offers another inspiring message wrapped up in the Mercedes-Benz logo meaning.

Mercedes-Benz delivers another explanation for what makes their logo so unique. Each point on the Mercedes-Benz star refers to an environment — Land, Sea, or Air — which the Daimler brothers believed that their company would one day conquer. This drive for universal motorization is emblazoned within the legendary Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star!
