Why Is My Steering Wheel Shaking?

You may be concerned if you’ve noticed your steering wheel is shaking. While there can be several causes for this issue, the most common reason is because of the alignment of your tires. Luckily, this is a relatively quick and affordable fix. Still, you’ll want to bring your vehicle in for service to make sure there isn’t something more serious going on, and to correct any issues before there is lasting damage.

• Brake Issues: If you notice your steering wheel shakes when slowing down, the issue lies within your brakes. Problems like defective brake discs, worn brake pads, and even worn shocks can be the cause.
• Bad Bearings: If your bearings lack lubrication or are otherwise damaged they can cause friction. This, in turn, creates the shaking of your steering wheel. However, this typically causes wheel shake when turning. In many cases, a simple cleaning can restore function, but occasionally the bearings need to be replaced.
• Suspension Issues: If parts are worn, loose, or the driveshaft is imbalanced, this could be the cause. While these aren’t complicated fixes, they can cause further damage if they’re not addressed in time.
