Premium vs. Regular Gas: What’s the Difference?
What’s the difference between premium and regular gas, and how do you know which is right for your new vehicle? Compare premium vs. regular gas in octane, burn time, and price, and you’ll find some notable distinctions. Mercedes-Benz of North Olmsted dissects the difference between premium and regular gas below, so you know what to choose with you hit the Westlake pumps.
Premium Gasoline Overview
Both premium and regular gasoline are derived from crude oil and both are combustible, however, these two different types of gasoline vary in octane level. Premium gasoline has a higher octane level, which is generally 90 or above. This allows premium gasoline to keep your engine cleaner and reduce pollution.
Regular Unleaded Gasoline Overview
The most common type of gas, regular unleaded gasoline has a lower octane rating that comes in at 87. An improvement over gas containing lead, unleaded gas is better for the environment and your health.
What’s the Difference Between Premium and Regular Gas?
Look at the specifics of premium vs. regular gas, and you’ll find there are a few additional ways in which these two types of gas differ:
- Octane Rating: Gasoline with higher octane levels decreases the chance of engine knocking, which can damage your vehicle. Engine knocking, also known as pre-ignition, is less common with premium gasoline.
- Engine Suitability: Premium gasoline burns slower than regular unleaded gas, which makes it a better fit for engines with high compression ratios. Since regular gas burns faster, it’s a better choice for low compression engines.
- Price: The cost for premium gasoline can range from 20 to 40 cents more than regular unleaded gas, which can add up over time.
Should You Use Premium or Regular Gas?
Before making your choice at your next Strongsville fill-up, it’s important to keep the following in mind:
- If your car was not designed to use premium gas, you won’t see any benefits in performance or longevity if you use it.
- If your vehicle was designed for premium gas, regular unleaded gasoline won’t harm it. However, if you hear knocking when using regular unleaded, then it’s a good idea to switch to premium.
- Some turbochargers may necessitate the use of premium gasoline.
