What is the Difference Between AWD and 4WD?
If you have been car shopping around near Westlake, you’ve probably heard of these two terms, AWD and 4WD. While it may seem like they are the same at first glance, they are actually not. So what are the differences between AWD and 4WD? Let Mercedes-Benz of North Olmsted walk you through the differences in our AWD vs. 4WD guide before browsing our inventory for a Mercedes-Benz AWD vehicle.
AWD vs. 4WD: What is AWD (All-Wheel Drive)?
All-wheel drive, or as they are commonly referred to as AWD, is a type of drivetrain where the engine sends the torque to the front and rear axles and then to all four wheels using differentials. Within the AWD world, there are various types of systems, such as:
- Full-time AWD: sends torque to the front and rear axles at all times
- Part-time AWD: sends torque to the front axle only when system is needed according to road conditions and your driving behavior on the Cleveland roads
AWD vs. 4WD: What is 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive)?
On the other hand, four-wheel drive, or as they’re known as 4WD, is a traditional 4×4 drivetrain. The main difference between AWD and 4WD is that in addition to directing power to the front and rear axles, 4WD systems can also control a particular amount of power between the left and right wheels. That’s why it is most common to find 4WD systems in vehicles for maximum off-road performance and vehicles with truck-based platforms as they need more control when it comes to power!
Do I Need AWD or 4WD?
While one is not necessarily better than the other, it depends on your needs for your Avon commutes. If you want better handling and control on the road even during harsh Ohio weather, you can count on a Mercedes-Benz AWD vehicle to get the job done. However, if you are serious about driving off-road or you need a truck for your job, you will be better off with a 4WD system.
