What’s New for the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA?
Despite being introduced in the 2015 model year, the Mercedes-Benz GLA just went under the knife, and the results are amazing. The revision for 2018 gives the already almost-unbeatable GLA a greater advantage over its rivals. The incoming 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA FL continues with three trims: the 2018 GLA 250, the GLA 250 4MATIC®, and the AMG® GLA 45. Visual upgrades to the exterior include new 18-inch wheels, a larger three-pointed star on the grille, and redesigned front and rear bumpers. The GLA models also get a new available Canyon Beige color and newly optional LED headlights (standard on the AMG® GLA 45) that Daimler claims to have a daylight-like color signature. The rear also receives new LED taillights. Tweaks can also be seen on the mirror housings, the front pillars, the underbody, and the rear spoiler. For a more aggressive look, the AMG® GLA 45 sits lower and features a front splitter insert in silver chrome, new air intake grilles, and a restyled front apron. Inside the 2018 GLA are a different seat trim pattern, soft MB-Tex covering, a redesigned instrument cluster, a bold dash trim with lots of red highlights, and Black Ash matte wood replaces Burl Walnut. Daimler also gives it an 8.0-inch high-resolution display and a rearview camera. Options on the refreshed GLA include a class-exclusive 360-degree camera, an off-road comfort suspension package, and a hands-free access feature that allows you to open or close the rear hatch with foot movement. 2018 also brings a new Performance Studio Package for the 2018 GLA 45 that adds black paint with gray and yellow highlights to the exterior and yellow trim highlights inside. All GLA models provide 17 cu ft of cargo space and 43.6 cubes with the rear seats up and folded respectively.
Daimler’s turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-Cylinder is the standard engine powering the GLA 250 and GLA 250 4MATIC® models. It returns 208 horsepower @5,500 rpm and 258 pound-feet of torque from 1,250 rpm to 4,000 rpm on both trims. The engine is complemented by a seven-speed dual clutch transmission to direct power to the front wheels in the base 2018 GLA 250 model, and to all wheels in the GLA 250 4MATIC®. The former makes a 7.2-second dash to 60 mph, while the latter takes advantage of the extra traction to reduce the time by 0.1 seconds. The 2018 AMG® GLA 45 ups the ante with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder powerhouse that pumps out a massive 375 hp @6,000 rpm and 350 pound-feet of torque from 2,250 rpm to 5,000 rpm. It employs a specialized Speedshift seven-speed dual clutch transmission to drive all wheels. Daimler says that the GLA 45 shoots from zero to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds, topping out at 155 miles per hour; adding the AMG® Dynamic Plus Package extends the maximum speed to 167 mph. To reduce aerodynamic drag, Mercedes-Benz engineers incorporate underbody panels to reduce turbulence, a tailgate spoiler to lengthen the roofline, carefully shaped door mirror housings, and a low A-pillar step. Safety is paramount for the 2018 GLA with a comprehensive eight-airbag system. A forward collision warning system with ATTENTION ASSIST® and forward collision warning is also standard. The IIHS and the federal testers are yet to test the new GLA, but based on the previous models, it is expected to perform well.
