What’s Expected for the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe?
Completely redesigned for the 2018 model year, the all-new E-Class coupe is bigger and bolder than all its predecessors. The increase in size translates into a more aggressive presence and a cabin that is far roomier than that of its rivals, yes, including the BMW 6 Series. The E-Class coupe is currently only available in the E 400 trim. Although it shares the same modular platform underpinnings with the E-Class sedan, its silhouette is sleeker, and the design language is a bit altered. Externally, the E 400 Coupe is a blend of the S-Class and the C-Class coupes, as Daimler continues to homogenize its lineup. It is characterized by pillar-less side windows, a flowing roofline, and a diamond-patterned grille. Things get better inside the cabin with a stylish, high-tech cockpit, leather on the dash and seats, and a chromed metallic trim. An array of striking circular vents on the multi-tiered dashboard direct air around the cabin to enhance the atmosphere inside the cabin. A glossy carbon fiber surface on the upper dash, a glossy piano black material on the center console, and a gorgeous matte wood trim are among upscale superlatives to choose from. For 2018, the E-Class coupe receives a 12.3-inch high-resolution infotainment interface integrated with Mercedes-Benz signature COMAND® system. Also standard is a second 12.3-inch widescreen instrument cluster display. The Multimedia system can either be controlled via the Mercedes-Benz trackpad-dial control system or buttons on the steering wheel. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay can be optioned on models outfitted with navigation. The coupe also gets a wireless inductive charging pad.
Powering the base 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class coupe will be a 3.0-liter bi-turbo V-6 engine that pushes out 329 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. The new coupe is offered in both RWD and AWD 4MATIC® drive formats. Paired with the standard Mercedes-Benz 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission, the engine takes a rear-wheel-drive E 400 from zero to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, topping out at of 130 mph. An AMG® version of the same engine is also expected to hit the market soon after the regular model, and Mercedes-Benz says that it will put out about 450 horsepower. The coupe presents a choice of three suspension setups. The first is the standard lowered suspension with selective damping. You can also opt for a multi-chamber air suspension with an advanced continuously adaptive, electric damping operation that automatically acclimates to your driving conditions. The third option is the Dynamic Body Control system which allows drivers to toggle the throttle, suspension, and transmission settings through five driving modes: comfort, eco, sport, sport+, and individual. Daimler says that power is delivered confidently and smoothly regardless of engine choice and that the nine-speed gearbox is very responsive with well-chosen shifts. Automatic emergency braking is provided as standard equipment, while the Drive Pilot semi-autonomous system is a payable option.
